SORYU Class oftwelve non -nuclear submarines (SS) of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF)built in Kobe shipyards of Mitsubishi and Kawasaki. The first twoboats commission ed in 2009 and 2010, Soryu (SS-501) and Unryu (SS-502),inherited the names of Japanese aircraft carriers from WWII, and the class has the largest ton nage displacement of any JMSDF vessel since the Second WorldWar. Updated from the Oyashio class,diesel-electric SORYU uses four Stirling Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP)engines, two Kawasakidiesel engines and two electric motors. Armament includes Type 89 UGM-84Harpoon Anti-ship Missiles (AShM). O the r boats in SORYU Class: Hakuryu (SS-503), Kenryu (SS-504),Zuiryu (SS-505), Kokuryu (SS-506), Jinryu (SS-507), Sekiryu (SS-508) and fouras yet un-named craft SS-509, SS-510, SS-511 SS-512.
