The F3F-1 was first flown on March 20, 1935, and was a considerable improvement over its predecessor, the F2F. The F3F-1 was more stable than the F2F due to its lengthened fuselage and longer wingspan. Deliveries to the Navy started in January of 1936, and five very active years of fleet service followed, after which the F3F-1 was finally retired to training squadrons. The F3F-1 marked the beginning of the end of the biplane era, but before they disappeared, they helped train a generation of pilots who would fly in the courageous defense of a country that was woefully ill-equipped to enter into the looming world war.
